"In pursuit of a better life, homeschooling and homesteading couple Ryan and Shauna Royten made the bold decision to uproot their family from Los Angeles, CA, and settle in California City, CA. Their hopes for a fresh start, however, were met with the stark reality of a food desert devoid of even a single grocery store. Undeterred by this challenge, the Roytens embarked on a journey, spending three years commuting 1.5 hours each way multiple times a week to procure organic produce for their growing family.
Rather than bemoaning the deficiencies of their new city, Ryan and Shauna resolved to be the agents of change they sought. Thus, Royten’s Enrichment Academy Community Hope (REACH) was born.
In 2019, REACH undertook the creation of a community garden, employing regenerative and organic practices to provide the California City community with access to fresh, locally-grown produce at no cost. When the global pandemic struck, exacerbating food insecurity, REACH redoubled its efforts to ensure the community's sustenance, tirelessly working towards establishing a weekly, year-round farmer's market.
After surmounting numerous hurdles, the Cal City Farmer's Market came into fruition in 2021, uniting local farmers, artisans, and crafters every Saturday to cater not only to California City but also neighboring communities.
Today, the Cal City Farmer's Market and REACH Community Garden stand as pillars of strength in California City, instilling residents with a sense of community pride while offering access to fresh, all-natural, locally-sourced produce.
Through diligent research, resource allocation, and educational initiatives, REACH has left an indelible mark on its community, extending its reach to support other underrepresented communities in their quest for self-sustainability and holistic wellness."
